In this interview, Anastasia Kapetas, National Security Editor of The Strategist speaks to Gill about her career pathway through and experiences in senior leadership positions within the Australian Public Service. Gill reflects on the importance of supporting the next generation of women and details some of the challenges that remain in achieving gender-equality within the workforce.
Gillian Savage is a senior fellow with the Northern Australia Strategic Policy Centre and the Deputy Director of the Professional Development Centre. Gill is a former senior executive in the Australian Public Service whose diverse career spans the national security, border protection, defence and wider government environments developing strategy and policy.
Through her public sector roles she developed and implemented biometrics for border control, enhanced air passenger analysis, and drove digital transformation and secure ICT infrastructure. Gill has a strong interest in place based policy and strategy which came to the fore during her work on Norfolk Island Reform.
Her extensive experience in business and people strategy, organisational capability and digital transformation has improved services, and enhanced leadership and people capability across government. Gill’s many years of experience in management consulting has transformed public sector organisations, lifted workforce capability and established-future ready ICT and cyber strategy.
