Move closer to US to avoid bowing to China
David Hale's excellent study China's New Dream published last week by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute should prompt a stronger debate about the strategic challenges facing Australia.
Hale is not an advocate of Hugh White's "China choice" argument, which says that Australia must distance itself from the United States to accommodate a rising China. Hale doesn't think China presents a military threat to Australia—why attack what you can buy? Nor does he think that Australia will abandon its alliance with the United States or look to China for patronage - our history and national values won't make that possible. Read more...
