Defence, Strategy & National Security Coordinator

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) is an independent, non-partisan think tank that produces expert and timely advice for Australia's strategic and defence leaders. The Institute's work helps to foster strategic expertise in Australia through dialogue, research and its contribution to public debate.

The Defence, Strategy and National Security Program covers ASPI’s traditional core work in the strategic policy field. It focuses on broad strategic policy settings, global and regional security environments, the operational needs of the Australian Defence Force, the development of our defence capabilities, and issues associated with defence funding and budgets.

The Coordinator’s primary focus will be the organisation and execution of the program’s research. The Coordinator will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to maintain and develop business relationships.  This will be a busy, fast-paced and varied role that would suit a highly organised and energetic individual.

Key Role Responsibilities

  • Manage the administration requirements of the program including those related to;
  • Specific projects
  • Sponsorship engagement
  • Fellowships
  • Identifying funding opportunities, including grants, and drafting and coordinating ASPI proposals
  • Commissioning of authors
  • Events, media and external engagement requests
  • Contract and relationship management of corporate and Government stakeholders
  • Co-ordinating the response to tenders and grant applications
  • Identifying and initiating new sources of funding
  • Facilitating the visits of International guests and visitors
  • Assist to strategically develop and manage communications through the ASPI website, and social media platforms and marketing materials, if required
  • Perform role of EA to the Director of Defence, Strategy & National Security and provide ad-hoc executive support for staff when required


Selection Criteria:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Highly developed organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Effective written and communication skills including the ability to liaise with people at all levels including people in government, academia and private sector whilst representing ASPI in a highly professional manner
  • Demonstrated reliability and the ability to execute sound judgement and discretion when dealing with difficult and complex situations. As well as a willingness and ability to occasionally work after hours
  • Demonstrated self-management skills including the ability to show initiative, problem solve, work independently, manage competing priorities and deadlines, respond well under pressure and work as part of a team
  • High standard of computer competence including experience of Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Experience working in a Government department and familiarity with Australia’s national security landscape

The successful candidate will be offered a remuneration package at a level aligned with their demonstrated skills and expertise. This is a contract position for an initial 1 year term with the option of extension based on satisfactory performance and funding partnerships.
