Artificial Intelligence Analyst

ASPI’s International Cyber Policy Centre (ICPC) is searching for a talented specialist in Artificial Intelligence to join the centre.

ASPI is an independent, non-partisan think tank that produces expert and timely advice for the Indo-Pacific’s strategic, defence & policy leaders. The ICPC is a large centre within ASPI that works on a range of topics including traditional cyber-security challenges, espionage & interference, emerging and critical technologies (such as 5G and smart cities), information operations and warfare, cyber-capacity building in the Indo-Pacific, and issues related to surveillance and human rights.

The ICPC is looking for a creative and passionate individual who can contribute unique skills to helping to highlight and better understand the emerging challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence presents. Artificial intelligence, and related advances in technology, are already impacting governments, businesses and individuals in multiple ways, and will have increasingly complex and far-reaching consequences in the coming years. This individual will produce original research, contribute to the public debate and help advise governments, Parliamentarians, businesses and civil society about these challenges and opportunities. They may be early in their career, or they may be senior.

Staff in APSI’s ICPC have diverse backgrounds and are usually involved in several projects at once. We are looking for a team member with a flexible, entrepreneurial approach, who is a self-starter, has an ability to deliver complex projects and enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.

The successful candidate will be offered a remuneration package at a level aligned with their demonstrated skills and expertise. This is a contract position for an initial 1-year term with the option of extension based on satisfactory performance and funding partnerships. ASPI promotes a workplace that actively seeks to include, welcome and values unique contributions of all people.  The institute strongly encourages people from diverse cultural backgrounds including applicants from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds to apply. The position can be flexible to suit the successful applicant, including part time working arrangements.

Additionally, this position may suit a secondee from the Australian Public Service. At any one-time ASPI has multiple people working at the institute who are on secondments or unpaid leave from the APS. Similar arrangements - including secondments - can be negotiated in this instance pending approval from the APS department/agency.

We are looking for someone who has all or some of the following:

  • appropriate qualifications in a relevant discipline with strong academic and/or practical experience
  • demonstrated experience and/or work capability relevant to Artificial Intelligence
  • demonstrated ability to work with limited direction
  • the ability to initiate, set priorities and manage different aspects of a project simultaneously

Applications should be submitted by email to: [email protected] and should include the following:

  • A one-page letter that links your skills to the above requirements;
  • A resume including names and contact details of two professional referees
