7th ASPI-KAS Australia-Europe Counterterrorism Dialogue: Strategies for a resilient democracy
Speakers Professor Günter Krings, Levi West, Associate Professor Debra Smith and Katja Theodorakis
ASPI is delighted to invite you to the annual Australia-Europe Counterterrorism Dialogue, an initiative by ASPI and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung's (KAS) Regional Program for Australia and the Pacific.
This Dialogue seeks to foster knowledge exchange on continuing and emerging forms of terrorism and violent extremism across the ideological spectrum– exploring how to proactively deal with an ever-evolving threat landscape through a comparative perspective.
Recognising countering terrorism and extremism as an ongoing political challenge, not only a security one, is prerequisite for a comprehensive strategic approach in the long- term. Under the overarching KAS and ASPI cooperation theme ‘A New Wave: Existing, Emerging and Converging Forms of Extremism’, the aim of this event is to facilitate a policy-relevant debate on effective strategies against extremist and terrorist threats to democratic integrity.
The event will begin with a keynote address by Professor Günter Krings MP, State Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, Community and Building, Federal Republic of Germany. This will be followed by a panel discussion on what it means to put a more holistic understanding of extremism into practice with Levi West, Director of Terrorism Studies at Charles Sturt University and Principal Industry Research Fellow at Victoria University, Associate Professor (PhD) Debra Smith, moderated by ASPI’s Katja Theodorakis.
This Dialogue is organised in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s (KAS) Regional Program for Australia and the Pacific.
This event will be held in a hybrid format, with a small, in-person audience and the option to join online via the livestream.
