Tech and Trust: Safeguarding AI for Economic and Security Progress

Date: 13 February 2025
Time: 5:15pm – 6:15pm
Location: ASPI Auditorium, Ground Floor
40 Macquarie Street, Barton ACT 2600

As nations begin to leverage AI to fuel economic, cultural, and security advantages, understanding its usages and establishing safeguards for its implementation is an important next-step in ensuring responsible adoption.

Countries vary widely in their readiness for AI—from their ethical frameworks and data management practices to their investment in infrastructure, all of which are critical foundations to build competitive companies and make AI-enabled technology accessible and trustworthy to their citizens. As growing middle-powers, Australia and Canada have responsibilities in aiding the design and uptake of this emerging technology with like-minded partners, while ensuring their own responsible governance.

ASPI’s Director of Strategic Communications David Wroe, will be joined by Canada’s Deputy Secretary for Artificial Intelligence to the Cabinet Dr. Mark Schaan and Microsoft ANZ’s National Technology Officer Sarah Carney, for a discussion on the intersection between AI and geosecurity.

The event will explore international trends associated with AI, particularly from a security perspective, including privacy, governance, responsible usage and ethics. The conversation will explore Australia and Canada’s global position on AI, and some of the collaborative opportunities available, both between companies and drawing on the broader ecosystem.
