On Thursday 25th February, ASPI and IBM hosted ‘An evening with Commissioner Andrew Colvin APM OAM’.
The evening was opened by Mr Stephen Loosley AM, Chair of ASPI. Mr Loosley described the close relationship ASPI has developed with the AFP, particularly in the areas of terror financing, cyber security and strategic policing. Commissioner Colvin was introduced by Ms Kirsten Garwood, IBM Executive.
Commissioner Colvin reflected on the changes and achievements of the AFP over the last 12-18 months, and discussed how the force is preparing to meet the challenges of the future. He highlighted the difficulties in facing increasing criminal activity originating overseas, the complexities of adapting to rapidly evolving technology, and the pressures of meeting national security and terrorism threats. Commissioner Colvin also emphasised the need to focus on AFP agile and innovative capabilities and the importance of developing the AFP’s Future Directions paper.
Commissioner Colvin’s address was followed by a Q & A moderated by Mr Loosley. Enquiries touched on diversity, building partnerships in the South East Asian region, unexplained wealth laws and issues with big data and end-to-end encryption. After the discussion, speakers and guests enjoyed drinks and canapés.
