The Cost of Defence: ASPI Defence Budget Brief 2016-17

On Thursday 19th May, ASPI and SAAB hosted ‘The Cost of Defence: The 2016 Defence Budget Brief’.

The evening was opened by Mr Peter Jennings, Executive Director of ASPI. Mr Jennings reflected on the contribution Dr Mark Thomson has made to ASPI and the defence budget discussion over the past 15 years. Dr Thomson was introduced by Ms Suzanne Birch, Business Development Manager – Maritime for SAAB.

Dr Thomson discussed the trajectory of growth in defence spending from the early 2000s, touching on the 2000, 2003, 2009 and 2013 Defence White Papers. He highlighted some of the lessons learnt over this period, and examined the reality of achieving the defence spending target of 2% of GDP. Dr Thompson also took an in-depth look at the 2016 Defence White Paper, Defence Industry Policy Statement and the Integrated Investment Plan.

Dr Thomson’s address was followed by an engaging Q & A moderated by Mr Jennings. Enquiries touched on strategic issues for the future force, shipbuilding in Australia, decision-making processes and the implications of the defence budget for Royal Australian Navy. After the discussion, speakers and guests enjoyed drinks and canapés.
