ASPI Masterclass: China's emerging military and strategic capabilities

The ASPI Masterclass: ‘China's emerging military and strategic capabilities’ is a one-day intensive event that will give participants a strategic insight into the development of China's growing military capability, strategic interests, and its impact on global relations.

The stakes for war and peace could hardly be higher and the strategic importance on northern Australia is lifting. This Masterclass will assess new challenges for Australia’s strategic interest in the face of a rapid build-up of Chinese military and security capability across all fields while evaluating the need to deepen practical cooperation with our strategic partners. Participants will hear from a range of experts who will offer their insights in this fast-developing environment.

Peter Jennings

Peter Jennings is a Senior Fellow and was the executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) from May 2012 to May 2022.

The Hon Kevin Rudd

Kevin Rudd became President and CEO of Asia Society in January 2021 and has been president of the Asia Society Policy Institute since January 2015.

H.E. Pernille Kardel

Her Excellency Ms. Pernille Dahler Kardel has been the Danish ambassador to Australia and New Zealand since September 2020.

His Excellency Mr Shingo Yamagami

His Excellency Shingo Yamagami is the Ambassador of Japan to Australia.

Emeritus Professor Paul Dibb

Paul Dibb is Emeritus Professor of strategic studies and Chairman of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre in the College of Asia and the Pacific at The Australian National Univ

Fergus is the First Assistant Director General running the Cyber and Critical Technology Intelligence Centre at the Office of National Intelligence.

Michael Shoebridge

Michael Shoebridge is the Director of ASPI’s Defence, Strategy and National Security program.

Jacob Wallis

Dr Jake Wallis was the Head of Program, Information Operations and Disinformation with ASPI's International Cyber Policy Centre.

Mark R. Watson

Mark Watson is a Senior Fellow.

Prior to this, Mark was the inaugural Director of the ASPI Washington DC office.

Andrew Davies

Andrew was the inaugural Director of ASPI's Defence & Strategy Program a post which he held until March 2018

Marcus Hellyer

Marcus was a Senior Analyst focusing on Defence economics and military capability, leaving ASPI in 2023.

Malcolm Davis

Dr. Malcolm Davis joined ASPI as a Senior Analyst in Defence Strategy and Capability in January 2016.

Anastasia Kapetas

Anastasia was the National Security Editor at The Strategist, leaving that role in July 2022.
