Biography

Ms Caecilia Wijgers is currently Ambassador of The Netherlands to Afghanistan.

Ms Wijgers started her diplomatic career in Latvia in 1993 following independence, served in Pakistan 1998-2001, in Burkina Faso 2001-2005 and as Deputy Head of Mission of the Netherlands Embassy in Cuba until 2009. 

Ms Wijgers returned in 2009 to The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Deputy Head of Division Political Affairs of the UN Department. Focused on UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding with specialisation in civil-military cooperation and gender in peace operations, and served in 2012 as Senior Advisor on Rule of Law to the Netherlands Integrated Police Training Mission in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

She was Coordinator of the Sherpa Support Team at the Nuclear Security Summit 2014 in The Hague and also served as Deputy Head of Mission of the Netherlands Embassy in Accra, Ghana and implemented the Dutch Aid to Trade agenda in 2014-2018. Ms Wijgers served as Ambassador of The Netherlands in Burundi in 2018-2020, managing a community based post-conflict program, and since 2000, Ambassador of The Netherlands to Afghanistan, focusing on Rule of Law and Security Sector related themes. After the evacuation in August 2021, working from Doha, Qatar.
