Eric Lies is an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in DC office where he specializes in security strategy, military affairs, and the AUKUS agreement.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear trained surface warfare officer for nine years after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 2014 with a major in international relations. During his time in, he served throughout the world, deploying to the Arabian Gulf as well as the South China Sea, and was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. After serving in the navy, he completed a master’s in international negotiation and post conflict transitions at American University and was awarded the Louis Goodman Award for academic and scholarly excellence. As part of his studies, Eric examined fragile states and regional stability from Latin America to the Indo-Pacific and was one of the lead authors for a U.S. State Department report on the impacts of sanctions on Iran.
