Biography

Dr Bee Yun JO is Associate Research Fellow at the Center for Security and Strategy(defense strategy division), Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA). She is also Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Indo-Pacific Security Initiative(IPSI), Atlantic Council.

Before joining KIDA in 2020, she was Research Professor at Institute of International Affairs(IIA), Seoul National University, and full-time lecturer at East Asia International College(EIC), Yonsei University. Her research focuses on South Korea's deterrence and defense strategy, particularly on US's extended deterrence and US's nuclear strategy.

Her recent publications include "Conventional-Nuclear Ingration(CNI) as Alliance Practice for Extended Deterrence and Assurance"(Journal of Peace and Unification, 2024), "The Contours of South Korea's Nuclear Debates"(GW Institute for Korean Studies, 2023), "The Nukes We Need: Retrofitting American Extended Deterrent"(Journal of Peace and Unification, 2022), and "Plan B for Non-Nuclear States in East Asia"(National Strategy, 2021). Her publications also appear in Asian Perspective, International Relations of the Asia-Pacific and others.

She is evaluation committee member of ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MOFA) and advisory committee member of MOFA's Department of Arms Control and Nonproliferation. She is editorial board member of Korean Political Science Review and Review on Nuclear Energy Strategy and Policy. She is also planning board member of Korean Association for Political and Diplomatic History, and executive board member of The Korean Association of Area Studies. She holds Bachelor of Fine Arts, with honors, from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). She received M.A.(Valedictorian) and Ph.D. in International Studies from Graduate School of International Studies(GSIS), Seoul National University.
