The Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support

Dr Mike Kelly entered parliament as the member for Eden-Monaro following the 2007 Federal election. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support in the first Rudd ministry.  Before entering politics Dr Kelly was a legal corps officer in the Australian Army. In 1993 Mike was deployed to Somalia to participate in Operation Restore Hope as Legal Adviser with First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. Colonel Kelly was awarded the Chief of the General Staff Commendation (1993) and made a Member of the Order of Australia (1994). Mr Peter Varghese, Director-General, Office of National Assessments

Mr Peter Varghese was appointed as the Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA) on 12 January 2004. Prior to his appointment to ONA, Mr Varghese was the Senior Advisor (International) to the Prime Minister.

For most of his professional life, Mr Varghese has been a career officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which he joined in 1979. He has served in Vienna, Washington, Tokyo and Malaysia.

Mr Varghese will be speaking on 'The strategic consequences of shifting global economic power'.
