The Australian Strategic Policy Institute and Hewlett Packard hosted a panel discussion with three eminent US experts on prospects for the Australia–US defence alliance. The alliance is going through a significant period of growth following the announcement late in 2011 of enhanced cooperation with the US Marines and Air Force and America’s ‘rebalance’ towards the Asia–Pacific. What impacts will the US Presidential election outcome have on alliance cooperation? How will reductions in defence spending in the US and Australia impact on alliance cooperation? How does the region view Australian–US defence cooperation? Moderated by Catherine McGrath, one of Australia’s most experienced foreign and political journalists, our panel comprised some leading American thinkers on defence and strategic policy as well as ASPI’s Peter Jennings.
